The Assam Science Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC) is an autonomous organization established in 1986-87 under the Department of Science, Technology, and Environment, Government of Assam. Its primary objective is to implement significant programs in the fields of science and technology, remote sensing, energy (focusing on non-conventional and renewable sources), and environmental management within the state.

Objectives and Functions

ASTEC is dedicated to identifying areas where science and technology can be harnessed for Assam's socio-economic development. The council initiates, supports, promotes, and coordinates research and development projects, encouraging scientific inquiry and innovation. A key aspect of its mission is to popularize science and technology, fostering a scientific temper and attitude among all sections of society, including children.

Research Promotion and Advisory Role

To advance scientific research, ASTEC provides financial support to scientists, technical experts, and institutions engaged in science, technology, and environmental studies within Assam. The council also serves an advisory role, offering guidance to government departments, public bodies, and other organizations on various aspects of science, technology, and environmental matters relevant to their operations.

Environmental Information System (ENVIS)

ASTEC manages the ENVIS center, focusing on environmental awareness and the dissemination of information related to Assam's ecological concerns.

Biodiversity Data Bank

The council is involved in establishing a comprehensive database to document and monitor the state's rich biodiversity, aiding in conservation and sustainable use efforts.

Status of Environment Report

ASTEC prepares detailed reports assessing the environmental conditions of Assam, providing valuable insights for policy-making and environmental management.
