Sunando Dasgupta

Sunando Dasgupta has made his own path in contemporary Indian Architecture, gaining recognition across India and emerging as a brand Architect for National Science Cities and State level Science Museums and Centers.

He is one of the few architects in India to have designed two Iconic Science City projects apart from several other State and District level Science Centers.

Born in 1958 in Asansol in the State of West Bengal, he studied in Kolkata and received his degree in Bachelor of Architecture from Bengal Engineering College in 1981.

He worked under many reputed Architects in Delhi, notably Vasant Kamath in his early years before starting his own firm in 1991, in Delhi.

After a few initial years of striving to give his practice a sense of direction and a meaningful expression of self, his career took an upswing when an eminent bench of Juries selected him to design a Science Museum amidst the lush green hills and forests of Western Ghats in India, near Mangalore.

This project underlines many characteristics of Sunando’s other works, particularly his obsession for immaculate space planning, his uncanny ability to juxtapose systems and style with ease and clarity, and his deep respect towards vernacular and stark simplicity of forms.

He emphasizes “Buildings are an extension of their natural habitat and genius loci – – they must evolve out of their geospatial contexts, and not impose on their surroundings”

Sunando Dasgupta went on to design breakthrough projects across India, notably the Vigyan Gram at Agartala, and the Science City at Guwahati, both awarded to him through National level Architectural Design Competitions.

His ability to handle large scale projects with challenging technical interventions in structure and services with intuitive and innovative aesthetics is a reflection of his commitment towards creating successful solutions for building design.

His work is characterized by a talent for integrating built form with surrounding topography, environment, landscapes and people.

His designs for a Living History Museum at Siliguri and a Bio Diversity Museum in Hyderabad are recent examples of his design innovation the field of Museum Architecture.

As evidenced through his oeuvre, Sunando Dasgupta has created a unique place for himself in the arena of Contemporary Architecture in India.
